James Poniewozik of The New York Times called the show "curious at commencement glance" but "complex." He praised the interim, particularly that of Sanaa Lathan, the program'southward multilayered storylines, and compared it to the ABC'southward American Criminal offence and HBO's The Wire. However, Poniewozik also criticized the evidence's handling of the political sideplots, and said "a lot of the exposition is ham-handed."[29]

Writing for The Hollywood Reporter, Daniel Fienberg as well praised Lathan's acting, but said the prove offered "clunky mystery plotting". He went on to say "sometimes Shots Fired articulates its points smartly and with pragmatism, simply other times you're stuck with characters maxim things like "Liberals tin can exist racist, too," every bit if that weren't already being illustrated everywhere. Perhaps there isn't as much hand-holding as in ABC'southward American Criminal offence, only it's also significantly less ideologically aggressive than John Ridley's drama, which should come with footnotes." He as well mocked the testify's methods of stretching the plot across 10 episodes, Still, he did conclude that "there is much to adore here."[30]

Emily VanDerWerff of Vox gave Shots Fired a 3 out of 5 rating, calling it "generally excellent", and said "Shots [Fired] aims to be American Crime or The Wire. Information technology doesn't become there. The new limited series is a handsomely directed, nicely acted, overly circuitous mess." Praised were the characters and the premise, while also noting that "the show waters downward interesting ideas at every turn...by the time I reached Shots Fired's 500th scene with also-loud music meant to tell me how to experience near what was happening, I wanted to exist watching anything else."[35]

The LA Times said the miniseries has ambitions to be "something large...similar ABC's American Crime or FX's American Criminal offense Story...in practice, information technology plays more like True Detective, Inferior Form." The romantic plot lines were criticized, saying "major and pocket-size characters quickly fall into bed, more to get some sexual activity into the story than annihilation to practice with the characters or the example at hand." Praise was directed towards its premise and acting, but its dialogue was negatively received, concluding that "Shots Fired lumbers every bit an effect drama".[36]

Ben Travers of IndieWire gave the show a positive review, calling Shots Fired "messy just ambitious," with comparisons to American Criminal offense and American Crime Story, "engaging", and "(mostly) well-executed", adding that the miniseries "stands out for the right reasons."
